What our clients say

Tony Jones, Chair of Trustees, Tioxide Pension Fund

David joined our Trustee Board when our long-serving LawDeb representative retired in 2016. The transition has been very smooth and we have benefitted from David's broad technical knowledge and his practical experience of running pension funds, particularly in relation to a difficult negotiation over a Company guarantee.

Areas of expertise

Quickly identified as an extremely valuable member of any trustee board, David was appointed to eight clients in his first six months with Law Debenture. He is able to apply his technical knowledge as an actuary and his deep hands-on practical experience in running pension arrangements for the benefit of his clients.

David acts as chair for two clients one with assets in excess of £1.4bn and as board member for the additional six.

David’s roots in actuarial consultancy and his strong communication skills have helped him in a wide range of pension related projects from leading complex funding negotiations to the design and delivery of programmes to communicate pension benefits to a wide range of members.

In his larger clients he is a member of two investment committees and two administration committees again demonstrating his broad experience across all aspects of pension provision. Having worked for many years as the corporate pensions representative, David uses this experience to help trustee boards better understand their sponsor’s thinking about pension issues and support the negotiation of difficult issues with employers.

At a time when data accuracy is becoming increasingly important and pension administration functions are under even greater pressure and scrutiny, David’s experience in reviewing and managing data accuracy, calculation methodology and the service of the administration provider is a valuable asset to many trustee bodies.

Notable successes

  • Built a strong and effective working relationship between Trustee Board and Sponsor where there had once been acrimony and mistrust
  • Designed and negotiated two funding agreements which balanced the need for Trustee security and an appropriate pace of funding with the complex capital requirements of a UK regulated bank
  • Has led the design, implementation and communication of a new £1bn plus defined benefit plan and a new defined contribution plan
